What surprised you most about the HR program at K-State?
"Before starting the program, I thought HR was mostly administrative, but I’ve learned how involved it is in long-term planning, decision-making, and shaping organizational culture. It’s a lot more analytical and impactful than I expected."
Area of study at K-State:
Major: Human Resource Management
Minor: Personal Financial Planning

Honestly, there wasn't a specific moment when I just knew HR was right for me. The feeling of HR being the "right" path for me came from a series of experiences being exposed to professionals in the HR field. I've had the opportunity to meet and learn about many HR professionals and always leave more confident in my decision to pursue HR.
One big skill I’ve already used is professional communication. The HR program really emphasizes how wording, tone, and delivery matter, especially in sensitive situations. I’ve used this in work settings, volunteering, and even leadership roles by being more intentional about how I listen and respond to others.
I was surprised by how strategic HR really is. Before starting the program, I thought HR was mostly administrative, but I’ve learned how involved it is in long-term planning, decision-making, and shaping organizational culture. It’s a lot more analytical and impactful than I expected.
Ten years from now, if I were to ask my colleagues about my impact as an HR leader, I’d like them to say that I was a strong and trusted leader who loved others well. I hope my work reflects the values I hold close, and that I led with integrity, confidence, and respect while still advocating for people.
One thing I would tell my freshman self is to get out there. Go to the major-related clubs you’re even a little curious about, even if you have to go alone. Talk to that person first, ask the question, apply for the opportunity, and don’t wait until you feel “ready.” The connections and confidence you build early matter more than doing everything perfectly.
