2018 - Michael W. Upchurch is executive vice president and chief financial officer for Kansas City Southern (KCS) (NYSE: KSU). Headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri, KCS is a transportation holding company that has railroad investments in the U.S., Mexico and Panama. KCS’ North American rail holdings and strategic alliances are primary components of a NAFTA Railway system, linking the commercial and industrial centers of the U.S., Mexico and Canada.
Mr. Upchurch has held his current position since October 2008. Previously, he was senior vice president financial management and purchasing. He joined KCS in March 2008.
Prior to his tenure at KCS, Mr. Upchurch held various positions at Sprint Nextel over a 16 year career, most recently as senior vice president – financial operations. He started his career with Price Waterhouse.
Mr. Upchurch holds a bachelor of science in business administration with a major in accounting from Kansas State University. He is a certified public accountant and serves on the College of Business Advisory Board for Kansas State University. He is a former board member of the Boy Scouts of America Heart of America Council, and the Multiple Sclerosis Society-Mid America Chapter. In June 2011, he was recognized by the Kansas City Business Journal as CFO of the Year. Recently, he was recognized as a Top CFO in the Transportation Sector by Institutional Investor magazine.
2018 - Johanna Lyle earned her B.A. at the University of Kansas and her Masters of Accountancy at Kansas State University. She joined the K-State faculty in 1983 and is a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Government Financial Manager.
During her K-State career, Jo served the college by teaching undergraduates in the areas of Financial Accounting, Governmental and Nonprofit Accounting and Law for Accountants. Jo has always fulfilled her responsibilities with dedication and respect for her students and her colleagues.
She has received a number of recognitions and awards while at K-State including Ernst & Young Beta Alpha Psi Teaching Fellow, Baird Kurtz and Dobson Teaching Excellence Award, Kansas State Bank Outstanding Advising Award, Beta Alpha Psi Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award, Kansas Society of Certified Public Accountants Life Achievement Award and Mortar Board Outstanding Professor Award.
While at K-State, Jo chaired the Department of Accounting scholarship committee for eighteen years and was the faculty advisor or co-advisor to Beta Alpha Psi for twenty years. She also served as national board member and regional director of Beta Alpha Psi. An active member of the university community, Jo is a member of the K-State Music Theatre and Dance Advisory Council, the K-State Gardens Iris Society, the Friends of K-State Gardens, and the Friends of Beach Museum (board member and past president).
Jo has been a leader in her discipline while at K-State demonstrated by her outstanding service to the profession. Her professional service contributions include member of the Board of Directors and Leadership Cabinet for the Kansas Society of Certified Public Accountants, trustee and chair of the KSCPA Educational Foundation, KSCPA Governmental Accounting and Audit Committee, KSCPA Professional Ethics Committee, Professional Development Committee and Student Recruitment Task Force.
After retiring in 2014, she has continued to be active in numerous community nonprofit and service organizations.
2017 - Ken Selzer, CPA, was elected as the Kansas Insurance Commissioner in 2014 and began serving in that position on January 12, 2015. He previously worked in the reinsurance industry for more than 30 years, most recently as an Executive Managing Director for a worldwide brokerage and insurance services firm.
In addition to his credentials as a Certified Public Accountant, Ken has earned a numberof professional designations, including Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Associate in Reinsurance (ARe), and Fellow of the Life Management Institute (FLMI).
Ken is active in many professional, community, and charitable organizations. He has served as President of the Rotary Club of Leawood, Chairman of the Kansas Society of CPAs Educational Foundation, and President of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Heart of America Chapter. He is also an alumnus of Leadership Kansas.
He currently serves on the Advisory Council of the KSU College of Business and is a member of the KSU Foundation Board of Trustees.
He previously served as a Fairway, KS, City Councilman and City Council President.
Ken graduated with honors with a B.S. in Accounting from Kansas State University. He earned a Master's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern California. A fourth generation Kansan, Ken grew up in McPherson and Marion Counties in central Kansas. He has been married for 37 years to his wife, Deb, from rural Miami County,KS. They have two daughters, Mallory and Mackenzie.
Ken and his wife provide scholarships for graduating high school seniors in the Goessel Unified School District No. 411 in Marion County, and also support scholarship programs at Kansas State University as well as the Kansas Society of CPAs. They have developed and continue to support an innovative teaching recognition program in the Blue Valley School District.
2016 - Mark Soucie is vice president and chief financial officer of Koch Chemical Technology Group, LLC. Mr. Soucie leads the financial resources for a group of companies that design, manufacture, sell, install and service process, combustion, thermal, filtration, and pollution control equipment for refineries, chemical plants and municipalities worldwide. The group has manufacturing facilities and sales and engineering offices in more than 20 countries.
Most recently, Mr. Soucie was the CFO for Koch Fertilizer, LLC; one of the world's largest producers and marketers of nitrogen fertilizers with domestic and international production and terminal capabilities. In addition, he has held numerous roles with Koch Mineral Services, LLC, a diversified group of companies engaged in bulk trading and transportation including CFO, controller and treasurer.
Before joining Koch Industries in 1997, he was the assistant vice president of accounting at Mutual of Omaha in Omaha, NE, and senior manager in the audit department of KPMG in Kansas City, MO.
Mr. Soucie earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Kansas State University in 1986. He was a Certified Public Accountant, and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants. Mr. Soucie is a trustee for the Kansas State University Foundation and also serves on the university’s Finance Advisory Board.
2015 - Prior to his retirement in 2013, Barry Robinson was the Tax Markets Leader for Ernst & Young's EMEIA Region comprised of 90 countries across Europe, Middle East, India and Africa. He served as a Senior Tax Advisory Partner on key client accounts in EMEIA.
Based in London, Barry was responsible for leading the firm's client service strategy for nearly 12,000 professionals across five Tax sub-service lines – Business Tax Services, Human Capital, Indirect Tax, International Tax Services and Transaction Tax – and also the Law Specialty Practice.
He joined the firm in 1979 as an intern in the Kansas City office and specialized in Tax. He served as a Tax Account Leader for many clients of all sizes across a variety of industries, providing a full range of domestic, international and indirect tax services. He has also provided tax and estate planning services to top corporate executives and high net worth individuals.
Throughout his career Barry has been active in educational and community activities and currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Kansas State University Foundation and a member of the Kansas State University President's Club. Previously he served on the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Area Council Boy Scouts of America, Desert Botanical Garden (Phoenix) and Executives Association of Greater Phoenix; Advisory Board for the Los Angeles Sports and Entertainment Commission and the New Canaan Recreational Basketball Association; Arizona State University President's Club; and Arizona State University College of Business Advisory Board.
Barry holds a Bachelor's degree in Accounting and an MBA from Kansas State University. He is a CPA and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Barry along with his wife Marcia '81 and daughters Amanda '08 and Casandra '11 enjoy family time together at K-State athletic events as well as in a variety of outdoor and sporting activities including cycling, fishing, gardening, hiking and skiing.
2014 - Steve Lacy is Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Meredith Corporation (NYSE: MDP; www.meredith.com), the leading media and marketing company serving American women. Meredith is the industry leader in creating content in key consumer interest areas such as home, family, health, wellness and personal development. Lacy serves on the Boards of Hormel Foods Corporation, The Advertising Council, The Association of Magazine Media and The International Federation of the Periodical Press, and is past Chair of the Board of The Direct Marketing Association. He is a member of Financial Executives International and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Lacy also serves on the Board of Directors of the Kansas State University Foundation and is Chair of the College of Business Administration Dean’s Advisory Council.
2013 - Doug Gaston is the regional managing partner for BKD's North Region, an accounting and advisory firm. He assists clients in mergers and acquisitions and ongoing strategic planning for industries in manufacturing and distribution, construction and real estate. Throughout his career, Doug provided tax and business planning for corporations, partnerships and individuals. He is currently on the firm's Governing Board.
Doug is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Tax and Personal Financial Planning division as well as the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants. Previously, he was a member of the National Employee Benefit Committee.
Doug is an active member in his community and serves as a board member of Downtown Council of Kansas City, Civic Council and Museum of Prairefire. He is also the accounts ambassador for United Way and chairman of the Treads & Threads Sponsorship Committee. He serves on the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce CEO Roundtable and is a member of the Kansas State University Accounting Advisory Council. Previously, he served on the boards of Junior Achievement, Arthritis Foundation, March of Dimes, Kansas City Repertory Theater and the College of Basketball Hall of Fame.
Doug is a graduate of Kansas State University where he earned his bachelor's and master's degree in accounting in 1974.
2012- Jackson Day was inducted on September 7, 2012. He current partner with Ernst and Young's Americas Professional Practice and alumnus of Kansas State University's College of Business Administration. Day has served as acting chief accountant for the Securities and Exchange Commission, or SEC, and global director of Capital Markets for Ernst and Young Global. Jackson also worked in the successful implementation of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, which is the foundation for all public company boards as well as public accounting firms. Read more.
2011 - Paul Edgerley was inducted on September 30, 2011. He has been a Managing Director at Bain Capital since 1990, a private investment firm with over $65 billion in assets under management, where he focuses on investment in the industrial and consumer product sectors. He is currently on the board of The Boston Celtics, Keystone Automotive, Steel Dynamics, Sensata Technologies, MEI Conlux, HD Supply and Hero Honda.
Paul is also a member of the Dean Advisory Board at Harvard Business School, Kansas State University Foundation, The Shamrock Foundation, and serves on the US Board of The Right to Play and New Profit, Inc.
Prior to joining Bain Capital, Paul spent five years at Bain & Company where he worked as a Consultant and Manager in the healthcare, information services, retail and automobile industries. Previously, he was a certified public accountant working at Peat Marwick, Mitchell & Company. Paul was awarded an MBA with distinction from Harvard Business School and a BS from Kansas State University. He and his wife, Sandra, reside in Brookline, Mass. with their four children.
2010 - Robert G. Chapman was inducted on September 17, 2010. This was first time the Department of Accounting at Kansas State University inducted someone posthumously into the Accounting Hall of Fame."Robert Chapman's leadership abilities, loyalty to Kansas State and service to his profession and community exemplify the spirit of individuals inducted into the Accounting Hall of Fame," said Richard Ott, head of the department of accounting.
Robert George Chapman was born and raised in Manhattan, Kansas and graduated in 1941 from Kansas State University with a degree in General Science. He began his career with Ducommon Metal and Supply Company in Los Angeles before becoming a corporate officer with Zieman Manufacturing of Whittier, California in 1957. He would later become its President and Chairman of the Board.
Mr. Chapman served in the Navy during World War II as a communications officer in the Pacific. He continued his service to others through numerous civic, as well as professional organizations. The highlights of his volunteer efforts included being President of the Whittier Host Lions Club, President of the Medford Monarchs Lions Club and in 1973 President of what was then the National Association of Accountants, now called the Institute of Management Accounting.
Other highlights of his community activities include serving as president of the Los Angeles chapter of the Kansas State Alumni Association and he was a board member for the Kansas State Basic Cancer Research Center. He also served as vice-president of the Whittier Chamber of Commerce and served as a board member on the Whittier Hospital Board and the local Methodist Church.
Mr. Chapman died in 2001 and is survived by his wife of 59 years, Virginia, three sons and their wives and eight grandchildren. Members of Mr. Chapman's family were present at the award ceremony.
2009 - Julie Bryant was inducted into the Accounting Hall of Fame at the annual scholarship banquet in September. Julie was born in Seneca, Kansas. She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree, Accounting and Finance from Kansas State University in 1988. Julie currently holds the position of Controller with ConocoPhillips Canada based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Julie began her career with Phillips Petroleum in Bartlesville, Oklahoma in 1989. She participated in the Finance new hire program in 1989 prior to transferring to Odessa, Texas in 1990 as a production accountant. In 1991, she transferred to Houston, Texas to work in the Upstream Americas Finance Division, focusing on general accounting, planning, and budgeting functions. Julie transferred to Bartlesville, Oklahoma in 1996 initially into the Controllers Executive Reporting organization. She then advanced to supervisory roles in Downstream Retail Accounting and later Upstream Accounting. In 2005, Julie was promoted to Manager General Accounting, which she held until April 2008 when she transferred to Calgary, Alberta as Controller, ConocoPhillips Canada. Julie's husband, Bob, also works for ConocoPhillips.
Julie has been active with finance recruiting efforts for ConocoPhillips since 1996. Julie is a member of the Kansas State University Accounting Advisory Board. From 2004 – 2008 she was a member of the Supervisory Audit Committee of the 66. Julie and her husband, Bob, have two children, Hayden (Age 12) and Holden (Age 8).
2008 – Stan Weber has provided color analysis for Kansas State football games on radio for 19 seasons, second only to Dev Nelson's tenure of 25 years. Since 1997, he has provided commentary on Kansas State basketball games on both radio and television. The television games are currently shown on FSN-Midwest. In 2006, Stan began providing color analysis on radio for the newly created Kansas City Brigade Arena Football League team.
Since 2000, Stan has co-hosted a two-hour weekly radio show on Sports Radio 810 WHB called "College Football Game Day." He is also a regular on Sports Radio 810 WHB including providing the color analysis for the Arena Football League game between Grand Rapids and New Jersey played in 2001 at Kemper Arena, guest hosting for daily shows such as "Between the Lines' and providing color for NAIA tournament basketball games, high school playoff and all-star games. Stan appears twice weekly on Sports Radio KGS 1410 in Wichita, KS for a program called "Stan's Sports Spectrum." Stan is a regular analyst on Metro Sports television programs, including Chiefs' post games, MIAA Thursday night football games, Kansas City Metro Classic High School All-Star games, Metro Sports Sunday Night, press conferences and the nightly show "Metro Sports Talk" where he won a Mid-America Emmy Award. This is Stan' second year as the basketball analyst on KCTV-5 (CBS) coverage of the Big 12 basketball season and tournament and the NCAA tournament. Other television experience includes the annual Kansas Shrine Bowl Football games, Big 12 Conference Basketball on ESPN Regional, Missouri Valley Conference Basketball Tournament, Mid-con Conference Basketball on Fox Sport Network, NAIA National Championship Football games, and the NAIA National Tournament Basketball games. In August of 2005, a book authored by Stan with David Smale called "Stan Weber's Tales from the Kansas State Sideline" was published by Sports Publishing LLC.
Stan originally hails from Goddard, KS and was named Male Athlete of the Year by the Wichita Eagle in 1980 after finishing as an all-state football and basketball player. He was also the 1980 MVP of the Kansas Shrine Bowl All-Star Football game. At Kansas State, Stan served as captain of the 1984 football team and led the Wildcats in rushing while earning academic All-America honors from the College of Sports Information Directors of America. Stan also held many of the Kansas State quarterback rushing records until the Michael Bishop and Ell Roberson eras and was once name Big Eight Player of the Week after rushing for 113 yards vs. Nebraska.
Stan, who graduated magna cum laude, received his bachelor's degree and Master's degree in accountancy from K-State and in 1986 passed the CPA exam. Stan worked as a CPA from 1985-1989 for KPMG—Peat Marwick. From 1989 to 2003, Stan worked at National Farms for 14 years—twelve years as Vice President/CFO and two years as President/CEO. Since 2003, he has served as Vice President/CFO of Tower Properties in addition to his broadcast duties.
Stan and his wife Nancy, have four children—Brittani, a freshman in Interior Design at K-State, Stanton, a sophomore at Bishop Miege High School, McKenzi, a 6th grader and Landry, who is in the 4th grade.
2007-- Randy G. Fletchall is the vice chair of Assurance and Advisory Business Services (AABS) Professional Practice and Risk Management with responsibility for National office accounting, auditing, SEC reporting, quality control and risk management functions. He is a member of E&Y's Americas Executive Board.Fletchall transferred into National AABS Professional Practice group in 1996.
He served as National Director of Audit Standards and Methodology (Cleveland) and National Director of Area Professional Practice (New York) before being named vice chair of AABS Professional Practice in September 2001 and current position in June 2003. He spent first 20 years at E&Y (1976-1996) located in Houston and Phoenix serving commercial banking and other financial services clients and in key leadership positions in E&Y's financial services industry practice, including regional director of FSI for the southern/western half of the US. He was vice chair (October 2006-2007) and Chair-Elect of the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and Board member since December 2003. In addition, he is a member of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board's Standing Advisory Group and the Center for Audit Quality's Executive Committee and its Professional Practice Executive Committee. He was formerly vice chair and member of the AICPA's SEC Practice Section Executive Committee and Center for Public Company Audit Firms Executive Committee. He is also a member of the International Federation of Accountants Forum of Firms Transnational Auditors Committee Fletchall received a bachelor's degree in finance in 1974 and a master's in business administration in 1976 from Kansas State University.
He was born in Sabetha, Kan., and is a 1970 graduate of Hutchinson High School in Hutchinson, Kan. While at Kansas State University, he received the Putnam Memorial scholarship, a partial athletic scholarship, lettered in varsity tennis in 1971 and 1972, received the Wall Street Journal Student achievement award and graduated with 4.0 GPA in both undergraduate and graduate programs. He also served as graduate teaching assistant for Dr. Verlyn Richards and received Price Waterhouse Foundation Award as the top masters degree accounting graduate. Fletchall resides in Fairfield, Conn., with his wife, Vickie, and two children, Justin and Kelly.
2006 -- Joleen D. Moden is senior vice president of Internal Auditing for Verizon. She is responsible for risk assessment and internal audits throughout the company and its subsidiaries. She works closely with the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors in developing Committee agendas, charters and practices, including compliance with recent Sarbanes-Oxley and NYSE requirements. She is a member of the Verizon Management Audit Committee, Compliance Council and Executive Security Council. Prior to the creation of Verizon (Bell Atlantic/GTE merger), she had responsibility for GTE's worldwide internal audit function.
Prior to joining GTE, Moden was director of Corporate Audit at PepsiCo Inc. and was responsible for auditing the company's North and South American Operations. Also, she was the finance project leader for PepsiCo's restaurant spin-off in 1997. Previously, she was vice president, chief financial officer and treasurer of Signature Home Care Group. Earlier she was a partner with the certified public accounting firm, Coopers & Lybrand, where she began her career. A certified public accountant, Moden is a graduate of K-State with a bachelor's degree in business administration and accounting.
She currently is a member of K-State's College of Business Administration's Business Advisory Council and Accounting Advisory Council. She serves as Chairman of the General Auditors' Council of Manufacturer's Alliance and is a member of the Professional Conferences Committee of the Institute of Internal Auditors where she is also a frequent presenter at national conferences. She previously chaired various local and state committees of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants.
Moden has been active in the community, serving as a Board Member and Finance Committee member of the Dallas Women's Foundation; Treasurer, Executive Committee Member and Board Member of The Family Place; Secretary, Executive Committee Member and Board Member of the American Heart Association-Dallas Division; Leadership Dallas; and the Dallas-Fort Worth Chapter of Kansas State University Alumni Association.
2005 -- Maurice "Buzz" Stark received a bachelor's degree in accounting from Kansas State in 1959. He received his Master's degree in Administration in 1966 from K-State and his Ph.D. in accountancy in 1972 from the University of Missouri. He became a CPA in Kansas in 1961 and was also certified in Michigan in 1968. He was appointed accounting department head in 1979 at K-State and served in that capacity, except for a year's sabbatical in Italy, until 1994. He was promoted to full professor in 1980. He was the Arthur Andersen Professor of Accounting and the CBA Re-accreditation Coordinator in 1997. He was a member of the Board of Trustees for the Educational Foundation of the Kansas Society of CPAs 1985-1989 and was its chairman 1987/1988. He was president and board member of the Teachers and Employees Association of Kansas State University.
Dr. Stark has served on important committees for the American Accounting Association—including Midwest Regional Chairman of Administrators of Accounting Programs and Chairman of American Accounting Associate Recent Relevant Experience for Accounting Faculty Committee. He served as an accounting advisor on two accreditation visitation teams. He has been an accounting program consultant to several universities. Dr. Stark retired in 1999. He is married to Carolee and they have 6 grown children.
2005 -- Gene Laughlin received his Bachelors of Science degree in Business Administration from Rockhurst College, now Rockhurst University, in 1951. He received his M.S. in accounting and finance from Kansas State University in 1959 and his Ph.D. in economics and finance from the University of Illinois in 1964. He has been a CPA since 1959 and is certified -in the state of Kansas. He worked for Arthur Andersen from 1953-1955 and then came to K-State until his retirement in 1990. He was associate dean in the College of Business from 1965-1975. He taught finance and accounting. He was promoted to full professor in 1977.
Dr. Laughlin wrote two books, The Basis of Accounting in 1977 and Financial Accounting in 1984. He was selected three times as the outstanding undergraduate teacher in the College of Business and once as the All-University Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher. He recently completed a 6-year membership on the Board of Directors for Friends of McCain and was their treasurer for 4 years. He is completing an 8-year membership on the Board of Directors of Manhattan Library Association, 5 years as treasurer. He is an avid cyclist and has just returned from his 10 th 2-week bicycling trip in Europe. He has participated in the annual Bike Across Kansas five times since 2000.
2005 -- Ken Fox received his bachelor's degree in religion in 1953 and master's degree in 1960 in economics with an emphasis in accounting from Baylor University. He received his PhD in 1966 in accounting and finance from the University of Illinois. He is a CPA certified in Texas and Kansas. Before returning to school for his doctorate, Ken was an office manager at Byrnes Beverages in Waco, Texas and a staff auditor for Wilcox, Patillo & Co. and W.O. Ligon & Co. Although Ken did not graduate from K-State he is considered an honorary graduate after 20 years of service to our department (1969-1989). During his career, Ken published papers in the Accounting Review and Journal of Accountancy. He was promoted to full professor in 1973 and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the Kansas Society of Certified Public Accountants. Ken retired in 1989 and currently lives in Robinson, Texas. Ken is married to Beth and they have 3 grown children.
2004 -- Randolph A. Buseman is an audit partner in the Kansas City office of Ernst & Young and a 1977 graduate from Kansas State University with a BS in Business Administration and Accounting. That same year, he joined the Kansas City office of the firm then named Ernst & Ernst, became a partner in 1990, and has served in various leadership capacities within Ernst & Young ever since. Over his 27 years with the firm, he has developed considerable experience serving public and private companies in the Midwest and he serves as the Kansas City office Director of Emerging Growth Markets services, a practice that specializes in working with high growth companies. Randy has extensive experience working with companies in the manufacturing, technology, distribution and consumer products industries, among others, and has assisted many of his clients with complex acquisition and financing transactions as well as numerous initial public offerings and other securities transactions. In his capacity as Director of Emerging Growth Markets services, Randy coordinates the firm's highly visible Entrepreneur of the Year program, which culminates with regional, national and global awards programs in Kansas City, Palm Springs and Monte Carlo, respectively.
Randy is heavily involved in a wide variety of Kansas City activities focused on helping growth companies succeed, including serving on several Boards, and sponsoring various venture capital, economic development and legislative activities, among many others. He has also worked with numerous charitable and community service organizations over the years, in addition to his extensive involvement here at Kansas State.
Randy was born in Manhattan, Kansas, the only child of Marvin and Mariam Buseman, and lived here through his graduation from Kansas State. While at Kansas State, he worked with a member of the Accounting department faculty to found the Accounting Club and serve as its first President en route to applying for status as a chapter of Beta Alpha Psi. Although he graduated just before the chapter was installed, he is an honorary member of Beta Alpha Psi and has been an active contributor to the chapter since 1977. Randy has led Ernst & Young's recruiting efforts here at Kansas State from his early years with the firm and serves on the Kansas State Accounting Advisory Council and the Kansas State Business Advisory Council. He has been instrumental in establishing the Ernst & Young Accounting Instructor and Beta Alpha Psi Faculty Advisor Fellowships as well as the Ernst & Young scholarships to be awarded here this evening.Randy has been married 26 years to his wife, Cheryl, who is also a graduate of Kansas State with a BS and MS in Accounting. They live in Overland Park with their 11-year old daughter, Becky. Their two older daughters, Christy and Jenny, are both currently attending Kansas State.
2003 -- Rand C. Berney is the vice president and controller for ConocoPhillips and began his career with Phillips Petroleum in 1981 as senior staff accountant in controllers for exploration and production. From 1982 to 1985, he was a supervisor in the controllers division of exploration and production. He then became a senior supervisor in gas and gas liquids for one year. From 1986 to 1988, he was a staff director in corporate tax, followed by a position as a director of corporate tax from 1989 to 1992. He was named associate tax officer and manager of federal and international tax compliance in 1992. In 1993, he served as assistant treasurer responsible for risk management and investments in the treasury group, then as assistant controller in 1995 responsible for Phillips' operating budgets, accounting systems, executive reporting and external reporting.
Rand is a certified public accountant, a certified management accountant, and a certified internal auditor. He is a member of the Oklahoma Society of CPAs, the Financial Executives Institute, the Tax Executives Institute, the Conference Board Controllers Council, the American Petroleum Institute Accounting Committee, the Institute of Internal Auditors and the Institute of Management Accountants. He is past treasurer and federal tax chairman of the Oklahoma Chapter of Tax Executives and has served on various committees and subcommittees of the American Petroleum Institute. Rand is currently on the growth committee of Bartlesville Wesleyan College, and also serves on our Business Advisory Council.
Rand was born on June 2, 1955 in Phillipsburg, Kansas. He graduated from Kansas State in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. In 1985, he received a master of business administration degree from Oklahoma State University.
2002 -- Candace Duncan partner in charge of KPMG LLP's Virginia Business Unit assurance practice, was inducted into the Department of Accounting's Hall of Fame on September 20, 2002. Candace graduated magna cum laude from K-State in 1975 with a bachelor's degree in accounting. The Accounting Hall of Fame recognizes K-State accounting alumni who have achieved positions of leadership in the business world and in their communities, and whose accomplishments and character reflect well on the university, the College of Business Administration and the Department of Accounting. As an assurance partner with KPMG's Virginia Business Unit, Candace oversees its offices in Norfolk, Richmond, and Roanoke, Va. A certified public accountant, she spends the majority of her time serving clients within the consumer markets and the information, communication and entertainment areas. She has helped clients resolve all types of accounting and operational issues and routinely provides audit-based advisory services to assist her clients in taking advantage of timely opportunities, including mergers, acquisitions, spinoffs, and consolidations. She has assisted several companies with their initial public offerings and other stock offerings, including Dollar Tree Stores, Farm Fresh, Giant Open Markets Inc., Hampton University, International Family Entertainment, Jason Hewitt, Metro Information Services and nView Corporation. Her clients also include Canon, Virginia; City of Newport News, Va; Satellite Communications; and Infineon Technologies.
Candace is a member of several professional organizations, including the AICPA, Virginia Society of CPAs, and the Institute of Management Accountants. She was named an Outstanding Professional Woman in 1990. Candace has been active with the Department of Accounting, serving on our Accounting Advisory Council. In addition, she is a member of Old Dominion University's Business School Advisory Board, and the College of William and Mary's Accounting Advisory Board. She is a past board member of the national Beta Alpha Psi Advisory forum.
2001 -- Gary Boomer a certified public accountant, is chief executive officer of Boomer Consulting Inc. in Manhattan. The firm created The Technology Leadership Process, a trademarked system to help companies improve profitability and achieve their objectives through reviews, blueprints, team building and coaching. For the last seven years he has been named one of the 100 most influential people in accounting by the journal, Accounting Today. Boomer consults and speaks internationally on management and technology related topics. He is active in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, where he is currently a member of the institute's council and is past chairman of the council's Information Technology Executive Committee. He also is active with several local service organizations, including serving as president of the Manhattan Solar Kiwanis; treasurer of the Manhattan Country Club; a member of Leadership Kansas; joint founder of the Future Manhattan Program; chairman of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce; member of the KSU President's Club; and a fund-raiser for the United Way. Boomer earned his bachelor's degree in accounting 1967 and his master's in accounting in 1969, both from K-State.
2001 -- Roger Sink received his bachelor's degree in business administration from K-State in 1958. He is a partner with the accounting firm of Sink, Gillmore & Gordon LLP in Manhattan, Kansas. He also is a franchisee with Pizza Hut and Red, Hot & Blue and has farming and ranching operations in both Kansas and Nebraska. Roger is the past president of the Public Accountants Association of Kansas and is past chairman of the board of Manhattan Chamber of Commerce and Saint Mary's Hospital board of directors. He also served as director of the board of National Society of Public Accountants. Presently, he serves as chairman of the board of Kansas State Bank and is a member of Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community. He also serves on the board of trustees of The Master Teacher Institute for the Arts, Kansas State University Endowment Association, the Mike Ahearn Scholarship Fund, the Intercollegiate Athletic Council at K-State and the Manhattan Airport Advisory Board.
2000 -- F. Lynn Markel is a retired Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Officer for Koch Industries, Inc. based in Wichita, Kansas. Koch Industries is one of the largest privately-held corporations in the United States with more than 13,000 employees worldwide. The firm is involved in virtually all phases of the oil and gas industry, as well as in chemicals, chemical technology products, venture capital investments and financial trading. He earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration with an accounting major from Kansas State University in 1962, and a master's degree in accounting from Wichita State University in 1969.Markel was an officer in the US Air Force from 1962 to 1966. He joined Cessna Aircraft Company in 1966 as an internal auditor. From 1970 to 1976, he was an officer in three locally-owned companies in Wichita. He joined Koch Industries, Inc. in 1976 as an Assistant Controller. He became Controller of the firm in 1978, and was elected as a vice president in 1980. He became the chief financial officer, and was elected as an Executive Vice President and member of the board of directors in 1988.Markel is a member of the Financial Executives Institute, and a member of the Wichita State University Board of Trustees.
At Kansas State, Markel is a trustee of the KSU Foundation and has been a member of the College of Business Administration Advisory Council for over 20 years. He has been instrumental in obtaining grants from Koch Industries to buy the first computers for the College in the early 1980's, to furnish classrooms with equipment, and to provide the Koch Student Lounge on the top floor of Calvin Hall. Also at K-State, Markel was the 1996 Alumni Fellow for the College of Business Administration. He received the distinguished Service Award from the College of Business in 1984 and the Advancement Award for leadership of the Holton Hall building renovation campaign in 1983. He was named Outstanding Chief Financial Officer by the Kansas State Financial Management National Honor Society in 1992, and is an honorary member of Beta Alpha Psi Fraternity and the Golden Key Honor Society at K-State.
2000 -- Julie L. Davis is currently a partner with KPMG and in charge of their Intellectual Property Consulting practice. She graduated from Kansas State University with a BSBA in accounting in 1978. Not only was she first in her class with a 4.0 grade point average, but she was also senior class president and an officer of Mortar Board. Shortly after graduating, she earned the Gold Key in the State of Kansas for finishing first on the CPA exam.
After graduating, Julie moved to Kansas City and joined the firm that was known at the time as Touche Ross, which later merged to become Deloitte and Touche. After nine years in the audit practice there, she married Roger, moved to Chicago and joined the financial consulting practice of Arthur Andersen in 1987. Since then she's been promoted to partner (1991) and developed a national reputation in the intellectual property area. As such, nearly all of her work has to do with patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets.
Over the last ten years she has been asked to testify in several of the largest infringement lawsuits in America. She also consults with the firm's clients on how to use their patent and trademark portfolios to increase shareholder value. Julie has authored numerous articles and speaks frequently on the topic of intellectual property. She is co-author of a book titled "Edison in the Boardroom: How Leading Companies Realize Value from their Intellectual Assets." The book has already been praised highly by several Fortune 500 companies, like IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Ford, Rockwell, Dow Chemical, and Procter & Gamble.
Though Julie lives in Chicago, she has been a strong supporter of K-State throughout her career. She has served on the Alumni Association's Board of Directors and the Foundation's Board of Trustees. Further, she has been an enthusiastic backer of the Arthur Andersen Faculty Fellowship in Accounting. She joined KPMG as a partner in 2002.
1999 -- Bill Sinderson who lettered in baseball three years at K-State, received his bachelor's degree in business administration in 1958. He recently retired from the Kansas City, MO office of the public accounting firm, Baird Kurtz & Dobson. During his career, Bill was a tax practitioner dealing with closely held businesses and their owners. Many of his clients utilized his service for over 35 years.
Bill has been involved with Kiwanis, Jaycees, YMCA and various other civic organizations in the Kansas City metropolitan area. He has been a tremendous supporter of the department of accounting over the span of his career, and he has served on the Accounting Advisory Council for the past five years.
1999 -- Allen Webber graduated from K-State with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1960. He recently retired from Kennedy and Coe Certified Public Accountants and Consultants in Salina. Allen serviced clients in the areas of auditing, taxation, and financial management in numerous industries and fields. He has held all offices in the Salina Noon Optimist Club and was one of the originators of the Salina Silver Sabres, Inc. He has held several offices and spent several years on its board of directors and as field coordinator of the drum and bugle corps. He is a long-standing member of the College of Business Administration's Advisory Council and a long-standing supporter of the department of accounting.
